A Look At All Things Oil & A Video On The Macroeconomic Big Picture
There were a lot of interesting videos and podcasts this week, but a couple focused on finance and investments stood out. The first is a look at oil markets, where they discuss the outlook for oil in 2024 and M&A activity in the energy sector. The other video is a look at the macro big picture complete with stories from past market cycles and trades. It also takes a look at what they see coming over the next decade for markets.
Forward Guidance w/ Paul Sankey
While I’m very bullish on oil over the next couple years for a variety of reasons, I try to stay out of the echo chamber where other investors or pundits have all of the same opinions. I’m not against listening to different opinions, even if it doesn’t change my own. If I could sum it up, Sankey is pretty much neutral on oil for now, but there are a lot of moving parts that could have an impact on oil prices, including geopolitical risks.
He said that if it weren’t for Saudi production cuts, oil would be below $60 right now. What he didn’t talk about much was the flip side of that coin. To me, the Saudi production cuts were just a response to the SPR releases, and I would guess oil would be higher without the draining of the SPR. They also discuss continued consolidation in the oil patch, and he talks about his plan on trading the closing of the Chevron CVX 0.00%↑ acquisition of Hess HES 0.00%↑. If you are interested in the oil market, this video is for you.
Top Traders Unplugged w/ Kiril Sokoloff
This was an interesting conversation on a wide variety of topics. Sokoloff has had a long and successful career on Wall Street. They discuss some stories and trades from the past, including bonds in the 80s and oil in the early 2000s. They also discuss what they see moving forward for the macro environment over the next decade. They talk about the questions surrounding China, inflation, gold, artificial intelligence, and oil. There’s not one specific theme of the video, but it’s a good look at the big picture for the next decade.
