A Primer On Vornado And An Update On The Geopolitical Current Events
I’m back after a chaotic week where I didn’t have much down time. I moved to Boise last week, and my new apartment is finally coming together. It looked like a bomb went off for most of last week, and I spent most of last week running around to different stores, buying stuff on Amazon, and dealing with all of the setup/cleanup that comes with a move.
Over the next couple weeks, I will be writing up a couple companies that I own and give an update on the John Doe Portfolio and the trades being made in there. This week I have a couple more things to take care of, but I will be writing up another one of my holdings this week, Vornado Realty Trust VNO 0.00%↑, an office REIT primarily focused on New York City.
Yet Another Value Podcast w/ Hawkins Entrekin on Vornado
This was an interesting discussion on one of the REITs that I own, Vornado Realty Trust VNO 0.00%↑. If you have been paying attention to the podcast and video of the week posts, the Yet Another Value podcast is a recurring pick of mine because they talk about a mix of big picture ideas, but episodes typically focus in on one stock or sector. This time they talk about New York real estate (with a focus on office real estate), with Vornado being the main publicly traded REIT discussed on the podcast.
I will cover Vornado in more detail later this week, but listening to the podcast would be a good primer on the company. I understand that some readers will take one look at office real estate as an investment opportunity and skip to the next idea. Vornado is up more than 50% from the lows in mid-May, but shares still look attractive in my opinion if you have a contrarian mindset and the stomach to hold for more than a year. Contrarian investing at its finest is buying something when everyone else is heading for exit, when the narrative is so pessimistic that a small change in sentiment can lead to outsized returns. I won’t tell you that Vornado is without risks, but the valuation still looks cheap to me.
NATO Cracking, EU Cracking, Bonds Cracking
Alexander Mercouris, Alex Krainer, and Tom Luongo joined Crypto Rich (don’t worry, they don’t talk about cryptos) on his show to talk about recent developments in Europe and the financial markets. If you are interested in the who, what, where, when, why and how of what is going on in Ukraine, you would enjoy this video. They talk about the factions of the West, their different motivations, and the chess pieces (real world as well as in financial markets) being moved around in recent weeks.
They are optimistic that we will be able to avoid the situation in Ukraine leading into WWIII (which certain groups are trying to instigate), and I’m optimistic too. This is a departure from my pragmatic stance on most geopolitical situations (others have called me pessimistic), but if you are interested in a thoughtful conversation on current events that you won’t see on Fox, CNN, or MSNBC, spend a couple hours on this one.
