The Sahm Rule, Pax Americana For The Future & Inflationary Cycles
It’s been an interesting week on several fronts. It looks like I spoke too soon Trump not returning to Twitter. His conversation with Elon Musk on Twitter spaces was worth a listen if you haven’t checked it out already. I’ll be back tomorrow with a look at some of the recent developments with companies in the portfolio, but I think we could see some big moves into the end of the year. The setup on a couple in particular looks extremely compelling to me right now.
I have several podcasts that investors might find interesting. The first podcast talks about recession, the Sahm rule, and what might be in store for the markets and the economy moving forward. The second video talks about Pax Americana and how the US is well positioned relative to other major powers. The last podcast covers inflationary cycles and talks about how things might be near a trough with inflation potentially accelerating into 2025.
Odd Lots w/ Claudia Sahm
If you spend more time than you should on Twitter following different investors (like I do), you have probably heard a lot of chatter about the Sahm rule, interest rate cuts, and the odds of a recession. Some people think we’re going to have another Great Depression, others think we aren’t heading into a recession. This podcast talks a bit about what is happening now in the economy, unemployment rates, and interest rates. They also talked about how immigration could be screwing with the ability of the Sahm rule to predict a recession. It’s a quick listen but I found it interesting.
Palisades Gold Radio w/ Joel Litman
If you need a healthy dose of optimism on the future of the US, you might find this one interesting. He talks about Pax Americana and where he sees things going for the US over the next couple decades. He makes a compelling case that the US markets are going to continue to outperform. He also talks about the importance of going through financial statements for fundamental investors, including the footnotes. The most interesting opinion he had was his take on America’s debt level. He thinks that instead of focusing on American debt to American GDP, we should pay attention to American debt to global GDP. He points out that America effectively taxes the global economy through taxation of our international businesses, as well as the impact of the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency. I don’t agree with everything he talks about, but I enjoyed listening to this video.
Masters in Business w/ Lakshman Achuthan
I have said a couple times that I think inflation will be higher on average for the coming decade, and there will be peaks and troughs in the cycle. This podcast was food for thought on where we might be in that cycle. Lakshman talks about growth and certain things he’s watching that show we might be at a turning point heading into 2025. I still think a lot of investors are expecting a return to normal, but I think we are in the early innings of a different cycle that is going to catch a lot of people offsides.
